Learn what legislators need to know about the education issues that are near and dear to you. Also, hear a primer on our premier education report, the 2010-11 Study on the Distribution of Teacher Quality in Texas Schools.
2:15–2:30 p.m. Refreshments
2:30–3:30 p.m. General Session: How to Woo*
Don’t fly blind this Lobby Day; let ATPE be your wingman. Leave this session with the best tips and techniques for connecting with your legislators while promoting ATPE’s priorities. From making the first date to getting them to commit, learn how to form a lasting bond with the Legislature this Valentine’s Day.
3:30–3:45 p.m. Refreshments
3:45–5 p.m. Closing General Session: The Heart of the Matter*
Get the inside scoop from legislative leaders about how the 82nd legislative session is playing out thus far. Discussion will cover endearing topics such as education policy and the budget.

Take part in this fun event and help raise money for ATPE-PAC, your political action committee.

7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. ATPE member registration and information,
shuttle transportation and office visits with legislators
Take a shuttle from the hotel to the Capitol to meet with legislators, advocate for public education, and watch the House and Senate in action. Please note: ATPE will schedule your meeting with your senator, but you will need to call your representative to set up an appointment.

THE CHOICE IS RIGHT!
Cypress-Fairbanks ATPE didn't return with this year's title of Local Unit of the Year but we have returned with great information as we attended this year's Leader U

The final day of Leader U and after the Local Unit Planning Time was the General Session.
"The Choice Is Right!"
- The Opening General Session started off with a skit from the ATPE State Officers vs the State Staff.
- It was a skit right out of the "FAMILY FUED" theme.
- Friday, July 16 - General Session with Craig Zablocki (Lighten up and Laugh - For the Health of It)
- His upcoming book ( Spontaneity 101) provides practical tools for lossening up, becoming more creative and living in the moment.
- Awards Dinner was themed like you were taken away on a sunset Mexican "cruise."

Turning Point

Grade 1 - Math, Science, and Social Studies
As I walked into the classroom, I knew the school year would be different. Almost every day of the previous school year, the older children in the neighborhood had to drag me, crying, to school; but from now on, I would come enthusiastically.
This was a place I wanted to be—an inviting room with stars hanging from the ceiling and areas for different activities. A piano sat ready for my new teacher’s able fingers and strong voice. She welcomed us to the classroom with a genuine smile and assured us we were in the right place.
My desk was labeled just for me, and my teacher addressed me by name. I was immediately comfortable. I knew that she cared about me not only as a student in her class, but also as a person.
Learning was fun again. Being given the confidence I needed transformed me from a shy, unhappy student into one who loved learning. I wanted to be just like my teacher.
My mom must have gotten tired of listening to me talk about her. I am sure that I was not the first girl in her class who insisted on wearing a dress every day because her teacher did. To this day, I still recall Mrs. Bargerhoff as my favorite teacher, as well as the one I hope to emulate every day in my classroom.
